Lynchburg, Va. -- Thirty-five members of Lynchburg College's softball program trekked off campus last weekend with the idea of helping out in the community.

The Hornets players and coaches spent a few hours at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Lynchburg on Saturday, helping the church finish a landscaping project.

Lynchburg head coach Dawn Simmons said the volunteer efforts help instill the values that her program has thrived on for more than two decades.

"It means everything to our program to be able to give back and being willing to help others any way that we can," Simmons said. "Many people have given to us over the years to help us get where we are today as individuals and as a program."

Pleasant View Baptist has invited the Hornets softball program back this coming Sunday, where the players and coaches will enjoy a home-cooked lunch with the congregation after the service.
