Track & field piles up nine event wins at Randolph meet

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College outdoor track & field teams enjoyed an easy travel week, heading across town to the Randolph College Invitational, where they collected nine event victories in the final tune-up before the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships.

Junior Dalton Hoppe (Buchanan, Va.) got the meet off to a great start Friday evening, winning the men's hammer throw with a season-best heave of 45.39m. Hoppe had more success in the discus Saturday, winning the event by more than three meters (40.74m). He was also fourth in the shot put and the javelin.

Junior Rachel Murray (Chesapeake, Va.) chipped in another win in the throws, besting the competition in the women's javelin (37.02m).

Junior Randy Harris (Richmond, Va.) added to the win total in the men's high jump, clearing 1.87m to win. Harris also finished in the top three in the triple jump.

Lynchburg's athletes also fared well on the track, starting with the women's 100m hurdles, which freshman Amaya Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) won in 16.09 seconds; teammate LaMaya Lacy (Bremo Bluff, Va.) was third (16.2), and the pair also finished in the top three in the triple jump. LC also won the women's 400m hurdles thanks to junior Endasia Mitchell (Perry Hall, Md.), who finished in 1:06.46, and in the men's long hurdles with a solid run from sophomore Kevin Moran (Milford, N.J.), who won in 56.29.
Freshman Julian Douglas (Lynchburg, Va.) took top honors in the 100m dash, coming in at 11.06 to win by one hundredth of a second, while sophomore Reid Sharkey (Fairfax, Va.) won by more than a second in the 800m run (1:57.23).

The Hornets also got top-three finishes from sophomore Sammi Woods (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the shot put, senior Lacey Elliott (Newport News, Va.) in the 100m and 200m, freshman Jackie Lerro (Royersford, Pa.) in the 400m, sophomore Michela Cholak (Ocean Township, N.J.) in the 800m, juniors Morgan Watson (Concord, Va.) and Samantha Schreiber (Gladys, Va.) in the 1,500m, and Keaira Reese (Norfolk, Va.) in the 400 hurdles on the women's side.

Top-three finishes for the LC men included freshman Jake Degenshein (Collegeville, Pa.) in the discus and javelin, freshman Kobe Anderson (Katy, Texas) in the 400m, freshman Brandon Haag (Evington, Va.) in the 800m, junior Tristan Lucy-Speidel (Fort Valley, Va.) in the 1,500m, and junior Conor Cahill (Staunton, Va.) and freshman David Lovette II (Baltimore, Md.) in the 400 hurdles.

The Hornets will now turn their attentions toward the ODAC Outdoor Championships, which will be hosted by Bridgewater College on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21.
