Lancaster, Pa. -- University of Lynchburg distance runner Kaitlyn Johnson (Spotsylvania, Va.) continued her spectacular sophomore season, opening the indoor track & field season Saturday with a school-record-shattering 5,000-meter run at Franklin & Marshall College's Diplomat Open.
Johnson ran the distance in 17:55.74, placing second at one of the country's most competitive early-season meets and besting Lynchburg's school record in the event by nearly 40 seconds.
Jennie Pernisi previously held the Hornets' indoor 5k mark, an 18:35.01 run in 2011.
Johnson's previous personal best in the event was 19:00.17, which she set last season. That time ranked sixth in Lynchburg's all-time indoor top 10.
She broke out last spring, winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in the 10,000, and continued that trajectory this fall with the finest women's cross country season in Lynchburg history. She placed 36th in the 6k at that national meet to earn All-America status.
