Top-Seeded VWC Advances 78-61 over LC Women

SALEM, VA – Despite 22 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Caitlin Falls, the top seeded Virginia Wesleyan College women's basketball team defeated Lynchburg College 78-61 in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Thursday afternoon.

The Hornets struggled to get into the flow on the offensive end in the first half. LC committed 12 turnovers, and only two players scored in the first 18 minutes. Falls and junior guard Shea Kelley kept LC within striking range however during that stretch. Kelley hit her first three three-pointers, while Falls was 3-3 from the floor and 7-7 from the free-throw stripe in the opening half for 13 points, while she added four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. Kelley had 11 first-half points, and freshman forward Shannon Allan grabbed six rebounds. ODAC Freshman of the Year Sarah Seipp led VWC with seven points at intermission.

The Marlins took several second-half leads of 16 points, before LC cut the edge to 54-42 with 10:42 left, but could get no closer.

Kelley finished with a career-high 21 points, hitting 6-of-10 from three-point range. Senior Katie Crump tallied six points and eight rebounds, senior Carly Greenlief totaled seven points and Kelley also snared five rebounds.

Seipp had 15 points for VWC, while Kristen Blalock posted 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Hornets end the 2011-12 season with a 9-17 record overall. Virginia Wesleyan (21-5) advances into the conference semi-finals Saturday against the winner of #4 Randolph-Macon College/#5 Washington & Lee University.
