Hornet Women Hang on for 74-71 Upset of Randolph-Macon
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team opened a 16-point second-half lead and held on to score a 74-71 victory over visiting Randolph-Macon College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.
LC led 37-28 at halftime and extended the lead to 47-31 after an 8-3 lead to start the second half. At the 14-minute mark, LC held another 16-point edge (57-41) before the Yellow Jackets rallied. A 21-5 surge, fueled from nine points by Sarah Parsons and eight from Katie Anderson, tied the game at 62-all with seven minutes left to play. Hornet senior guard Shea Kelley triggered a small Hornet run, drilling a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to open another LC lead they would never relinquish.
Lynchburg led 73-71 with eight seconds on the game clock with a pair of opportunities from the charity stripe to potentially ice the game. LC couldn't convert on either end, but senior Caleigh Patterson hustled to grab the rebound off the second miss and was fouled. She made one of two and a long Randolph-Macon attempt was short to end the game.
Sophomore forward Shannon Allan had a double-double for Lynchburg with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and also had four assists. Freshman forward Chaney Forbush had 15 points and 14 rebounds, including eight on the offense end. Freshman guard Sammi Goldsmith hit 9-of-12 free throws en route to 12 points and also had six assists. Kelley made 3-of-5 attempts beyond the three-point arc and finished with 11 points.
Anderson had 24 points and eight rebounds for Randolph-Macon (0-4/0-1 ODAC). Sarah Parsons had 15 points. The Hornets held a 54-35 advantage on the glass.
Lynchburg (2-2/1-0) travels to Ferrum College Friday evening for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
