Shannon Allan Scores 27 as LC women Defeat Southern Virginia 61-59
LYNCHBURG, VA – Sophomore forward Shannon Allan scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Lynchburg College women's basketball team to a 61-59 victory over Southern Virginia University Friday evening in a non-conference game.
The Hornets took an early 12-6 lead, as Allan poured in nine points. The LC first-half lead extended to as many as 11 before the Knights whittled the advantage down to just three (33-30) at halftime.
Southern Virginia rallied to take the lead late in the game, and the Knights were ahead 53-50 with three minutes left, but LC defense kept SVU off the scoreboard until the closing second of the game. Freshman forward Chaney Forbush scored on a lay-up to bring the Hornets within one and Allan hit a three-pointer at the 1:27 mark to give LC a two-point lead. Allan gave the Hornets a four-point cushion with two free throws with 19 seconds remaining and the Knights tacked on a lay-up with one second left.
Allan hit 11-of-23 shots from the floor, and added four assists, four steals, three blocks and three rebounds. Lauren Penley had seven points and eight rebounds and Forbush had five points and seven caroms.
Mina Romino scored a team-high 18 points for SVU (3-4). Crystal Cleveland posted 13 points and 14 rebounds and Amaris Newkirk tallied 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Hornets (5-3) travel to Averett University for a non-conference game next Saturday, December 15 at 3 p.m.
