Marlins Hit 14 Threes to defeat LC Women 78-56

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Virginia Wesleyan College women's basketball team tied a school record with 14 three-point baskets Wednesday evening as the Marlins defeated Lynchburg College 78-56 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) clash.

The Hornets got off to a good start, taking a 7-6 lead after back-to-back jumpers from sophomores Katie Reeves and Shannon Allan five minutes in. VWC went on a 30-12 run over the next 12 minutes to post its biggest lead of the first half, 36-19. LC cut the advantage to 39-26 at intermission, but could climb no closer in the second half.

Junior guard Ann Dorris scored a career-high 10 points for LC, hitting 4-of-7 shots, and handed out three assists. Reeves also had 10 points and Allan finished with eight points and six rebounds. Freshman forward Sarah Coon scored eight points and sophomore forward Lauren Penley had six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Kelly Jones paced Virginia Wesleyan (10-6/5-2 ODAC), nailing 5-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc. Sarah Seipp had 15 points and Andrea Paphites posted 12. The Marlins shot 50 percent (14-28) from three-point range and forced 22 LC turnovers while committing just 12.

The Hornets (9-6/4-3 ODAC) host Emory & Henry College Saturday at 4 p.m. in more ODAC action.
