Hot-handed Hornets Shoot Past Emory & Henry, 72-62

EMORY, VA – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team posted one of its best shooting performances of the year, 47.2% from the field, in dispatching Emory & Henry College, 72-62, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets got off to a quick 5-0 lead in the first minute of play on a traditional three-point play by sophomore Lauren Penley and a layup by junior Caleigh Patterson.

LC would continue to control the first half, riding an 11-1 run midway through the period to take its largest lead of the first period, 24-11, with 7:38 remaining.

The Wasps would charge back with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 24-21, but a layup by Patterson with 3:20 remaining broke the cold spell.

E&H, trailing by three at halftime, actually took the lead several times in the second half with the last coming with 13:07 remaining. A three-pointer by freshman Sammi Goldsmith regained momentum for the Hornets while making the score 46-44. LC would not trail again.

Five points from freshman Sarah Toliver and a layup by Penley over the course of two minutes late in the game gave Lynchburg its largest lead at 14 points, 69-55.

Sophomore Shannon Allan and Penley led the balanced scoring effort with 13 points each, while Allan contributed nine boards and Penley four. Freshman Chaney Forbush posted her second career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds as sophomore guard Katie Reeves added 11 points, five assists, and four boards. Toliver rounded out the Hornets in double-figures, finishing with a career-high 10 points.

Karina Farr and Kristie Langley led the way with 11 points each for Emory & Henry (7-15/4-10) while adding nine and six boards respectively.

Lynchburg (15-8/9-5) returns home Tuesday, February 12 for an ODAC matchup against Virginia Wesleyan (15-8/10-4) at 7 p.m. It will be the annual Play 4Kay Game for the Hornets.
