HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team got much going in the first period, both shooting under 33 percent from the field, as Averett led 13-7 after 10 minutes.
Lynchburg used an 11-0 run early in the second to take a 20-15 lead, highlighted by three straight baskets by Allen, and Lynchburg took a four-point advantage into halftime.
The Cougars used an 11-0 run of their own in the third to assume a 41-36 advantage.
Allen's layup to open the fourth brought the deficit to 3, but Lynchburg never cut the lead any farther, and Averett's free throws down the stretch increased the lead to its final standing.
The Hornets will hit the road for Union, N.J., this weekend for the Kean Classic. Lynchburg will face Moravian Friday at 5 p.m. and either host Kean or Eastern Saturday at a time to be determined.
