#11 Lynchburg Strikes Early to Down CNU in 2-0 Victory
LYNCHBURG, VA – Two goals in the first 15 minutes decided the match as the 11th-ranked Lynchburg College women's soccer team defeated Christopher Newport University 2-0 Thursday afternoon on Shellenberger Field.
Christopher Newport entered the match as winners of three straight and received votes in the latest NSCAA Coaches' poll this week.
The Hornets got on the board thanks to a beautiful play in the offensive zone 12:35 into the game. Kelley Smith moved the ball up the pitch and crossed it into the box where Dessi Dupuy managed to put away a header from 15 yards out.
Lynchburg used the momentum of the early lead to get to the Captains again two minutes later. This time Dana Nelsen advanced the ball up the pitch, sending it to Dupuy for a second header and a second goal.
Rachel Sadowski tried to give the Hornets another goal when her header, off a Camille Bartley corner kick, headed towards the net. Christopher Newport's Priscilla Harrison slid over just in time to save the ball and keep the match at a two-goal spread.
CNU (5-2-1) used the team save to gain some momentum heading into the second half as Haley Casanova managed to turn away seven Hornet shots on goal in the final period. Casanova finished the day with nine saves.
Tess Frelick made a career-high four saves for the Hornets while also picking up her first collegiate shutout. Lynchburg had a commanding 9-0 lead in corner kicks while outshooting the Captains 24-5.
Lynchburg (9-1/3-0) hosts Virginia Wesleyan College (6-1-2/3-0) Tuesday, October 1 at 6 p.m. in a battle for Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) supremacy.
