Dupuy Dominates as #11 Hornets Down Centre, 3-2, in NCAA First Round
ATLANTA, GA – The NCAA Division III Women's Soccer match between #11 Lynchburg College and Centre College came down to the final 10 minutes, but in the end the Hornets went back to the hotel with a 3-2 victory.
Both teams challenged in the first several minutes, moving the ball up and down the pitch and forcing the defense to make plays. After the Hornets and Colonels held throughout the first 20 minutes, Dessi Dupuy got the scoring started at 23:12.
Angela Bosco took the ball in the midfield and headed it into the box for Dupuy for the game's initial score.
14 minutes later Alex Combs found the back of the net for Centre, directing a short pass from Brandy Orth-Becker.
The Colonels challenged late in the match, scoring at 74:16 when Morgan Collins found Liz Miller after a foul gave Centre the ball just outside the box. The initial shot was blocked away, but could not be cleared, setting up the tiebreaking score.
With just 15 minutes to play, Centre and its fans had all the momentum. The crowd was screaming as Lynchburg made another push. This time Dupuy found Bosco in the middle of the field, tying the game at two 50 seconds after Centre took the lead.
Dupuy put the Hornets ahead for good with seven minutes remaining as Erin Benson found the junior for the game-winning score.
Lynchburg outshot the Colonels 22-4 with a 6-2 corner kick advantage.
The three goals give the 2013 Hornets' squad 110 for the season, far surpassing the record for most goals scored in a season, set in 1999 (104). The win also breaks the school record for wins in a season set three times, in 2004, 2008, and 2012 (21).
Lynchburg (22-1) moves on to face the host, #8 Emory University (15-3-1), Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the round of 16.
