Forest, Va. -- University of Lynchburg forward Caitlin Mertens (Succasunna, N.J.) got off to a quick start for the Hornets women's soccer team in 2018, and it earned the senior a player of the week nod from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, the league announced Tuesday.

Mertens scored both of the weekend's goals for No. 16-ranked Lynchburg, including a 97th-minute golden goal to lift the Hornets past Gettysburg in Friday's season opener and a 51st-minute finish in the box in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Maryville.

It is the second-career conference player of the week honor for Mertens, who was an All-ODAC, All-State, and All-South Region selection for Lynchburg in 2017.
