Hornets start Up 2013 at Liberty Open
LYNCHBURG, VA – In the first day of the Liberty Open, members of the Lynchburg College women's track and field team competed at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center on Friday.
Two athletes (Katie Miller and Amanda Walters) competed in the Pentathlon for the first time in their careers. Miller finished fifth, with Walters taking seventh overall. The impressive first showing for both Hornets came with them finishing first and second among non-Division I competitors.
In the 60 meter hurdles section, Miller and Walters took the third and fourth best times overall, at 9.92 and 10.14 respectively. Miller tied for first in the high jump, with a career-best at 4'10.5". Walters took fifth and sixth in the shot put and the 800 meter race respectively to round out her day.
Britney Gulick and Emily Davis paced Lynchburg in the only throwing competition of the day. Gulick and Davis finished third and fourth of all D-III athletes in the weight throw. Gulick finished with a distance of 44'4" and Davis had a toss of 41'6.5".
To finish up the evening, Megan Lively had a solid first career mark in the pole vault, finishing with a height of 7'10.5".
Barring any weather problems, the rest of the women's team and the men's team will be in action to finish up the second day of the Liberty Open.
