LC Volleyball Defeats E&H, Climbs into Fifth Place
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College volleyball team went on the road as the sixth place team in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) trailing Emory & Henry by half a game, but leapfrogged over the Wasps thanks to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-12 victory Wednesday night.
The Hornets led the majority of the match, trailing last at 16-15 in the first game before kills by sophomore Aricquel Payne and senior Brooke Moughon along with an attack error by E&H gave LC an 18-16 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Wasps stayed close in the second game but in a crucial match in the ODAC standings, a 2-0 Hornet advantage was just too much to overcome. LC shot out to an early 7-1 lead in the third game thanks to four service aces, two each from sophomore Brittany Crawford and freshman Sierra Strathy.
Payne led the Hornets with nine kills. Crawford added eight kills to her three service aces. Strathy ended with three aces, as well as a team-high three blocks.
LC held a large advantage when serving the ball with ten aces to five errors. Emory & Henry had one ace to ten errors, suddenly ending possibly rallies the Wasps could have had.
Jamie Cockerham led the Wasps (15-7/5-3 ODAC) with a game-high 12 kills.
Lynchburg (18-6/6-3 ODAC) return home Friday night to play Eastern Mennonite (4-15/0-9 ODAC) as part of Homecoming Weekend.
