Hall of Fame Spotlight - 1981 Hornet Volleyball

As Alumni Weekend approaches, the Lynchburg College athletic department is profiling the teams and players selected to this year's Hall of Fame Class. The seventh profile is the 1981 volleyball team.

1981 LC Women's Volleyball Team

Under the leadership of Coach Jackie Asbury, the 1981 Women's Volleyball Team was undefeated in the division games of the regular season (13-0), first in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women – Southern Region, and went on to California to compete in the National Tournament, entering ranked seventh. The Hornets finished with a 24-3 overall record, their best season ever.

Outstanding seniors included Terry Waddell '82 who was named to both the All-State and All-Regional Teams.  Debbie Robinette '82 and Bonita Rowland Roberts '82 were chosen for the All-State and All-Regional Teams respectively.

Individuals who contributed to the team's success: Bonita Rowland Roberts '82, Deborah "Debbie" Robinette '82, Annet Schlosser '84, Kristen O'Brien, Theresa "Terry" Kunz Waddell '82, Paula Downs-Benge '85, Patricia "Patty" Bohmert Kaufman '82, Christine "Chris" Van Bourgondien Barbee '83, Lisa Delk Petrillo, Jacqueline "Jackie" Asbury (Coach), and Karen Davidson Heier '83.

We asked head coach Jackie Asbury a few questions about the '81 team.

What kind of players were Terry Waddell, Debbie Robinette and Bonita Rowland Roberts?

Bonita Rowland -- Great skill set and, most importantly, was the heart and soul of the team.  She kept them going in practice as well as in matches.  She often inspired the team by singing "Rocky Top" as practice began.

Debbie Robinette – Debbie was a player that always gave 110% and absolutely did her best in every minute that she was on the court.

Terry Waddell -- Added the wow! factor to the team.  When she prepared for her "kill" shot, everyone held their collective breaths as the shot went down.

What was special about the 1981 Lynchburg College volleyball team?

This team was great because as the season progressed they began to learn to believe in themselves.  Marie Lewis, the previous volleyball coach had prepared a team with good technical skills.  When I became their coach, I had neither played nor coached volleyball, so it was very difficult for them to see that they could win, but they learned that they could.  I had asked for a written statement of team goals from every player.  We were on our way to regionals before the final two came in.
