Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's student-athletes raised 1,250 food items in November's Old Dominion Athletic Conference-wide food drive, led by the 15 ODAC members' student-athlete advisory committees.
The ODAC as a whole shattered its previous record, clearing nearly 20,000 items.
Lynchburg finished fifth in the standings and was one of seven schools in the league to raise more than 1,000 food items. It was a huge improvement over the department's 2018 result of roughly 200 donations.
The Lynchburg SAAC delivered donations to local food bank Lynchburg Daily Bread and the University's own food pantry.
To spice up the competition, SAAC divided teams by their CODE RED buddies to see who could raise the most. Men's basketball, cheer, field hockey, softball, and men's and women's swimming topped the list with 346 items.
The ODAC's SAAC will conduct its next conference-wide initiative as part of Division III Week, which is held April 13th-19th, 2020. The ODAC will partner with Water Mission, a non-profit clean water charity that builds sustainable clean water solutions in developing countries and disaster areas. Each institution will raise funds to help bring safe water to hundreds of men, women, and children in Puerto Rico. This marks the third straight year the ODAC will work with Water Mission.
