Lynchburg, Va. -- Head Coach Percy Abell and his staff announced the schedule for the 2017 season on Friday afternoon.
The Hornet Baseball team is coming off a 9-28 season with a 5-15 conference record, finishing 10th in the ODAC, but the men have found new focus and have their sights set on making the ODAC Tournament and earning a regional berth.
They return a strong core of their team, including junior Matt Ward, who's strong bat was key to the Hornet's offensive output last season. Ward finished the year with a .312 average and an on-base percentage of .349.
The Lynchburg pitching staff will welcome back junior right-hander David Goulding who appeared in 16 games with 13 starts, threw 94.2 innings putting him top 10 nationally and was also the team leader in ERA (3.42), wins (5), and strikeouts (64).
Lynchburg will travel to Fayetteville, N.C. to open up the season with a twin-bill against Methodist, playing one game on February 4th and another the following day. They have a quick turnaround, heading back to Fox Field for the home-opener on February 8th when the Hornets play host to Southern Virginia.
To open up conference play, Lynchburg will host Guilford on Saturday, March 4th and then travel north to Shenandoah, who climbed as high as sixth nationally in 2016, before finishing the season at 11th. Tufts will make the trek to the Hill City for the sixth straight season on Fri. March 24th. The Jumbos are another opponent on the schedule for the Hornets who was ranked last season, sliding in at 13th at season's end.
Another big double-header for the Hornets will come the second weekend of April when they travel to ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon on Saturday the 8th. The Yellow Jackets saw their national ranking climb as high as 2nd in 2016, before finishing 8th.
The Hornets will wrap up their regular season schedule with a visit from Eastern Mennonite University for a double-header on April 29th, which will also serve as Senior Day.
