Forest, Va. -- University of Lynchburg freshman Brandon Pond (Chesterfield, Va.) capped off a tremendous collegiate debut with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's baseball pitcher of the week award, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
On Saturday, Pond closed out Lynchburg's first shutout since March 5, 2016 with four innings of scoreless relief in a 2-0 season-opening victory at Maryville (Tenn.). The right-hander scattered four hits and struck out three. He earned the win after the Hornets offense broke a scoreless tie in the seventh.
He stranded Scots on third base in his first two innings of work before settling in. Maryville got just one baserunner aboard in the final two innings of the ballgame.
Pond is Lynchburg's first ODAC pitcher of the week since David Goulding won the award Feb. 13, 2017.
