Baseball closes regular season with win

Griffin Wild in his batting stance

Greensboro, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team scored 11 unanswered runs to erase an early deficit Tuesday evening in the Hornets' 12-6 road win over Greensboro.

Lynchburg's bullpen tossed 7 ⅓ scoreless innings in the victory, while the Hornet offense stole a season-high 13 bases.

Senior third baseman Griffin Wild (Severna Park, Md.) and senior designated hitter Chris Blake (Middlesex, Va.) each went 2-for-4 with a double at the plate and scored two runs. Wild also stole a base.

Freshman catcher Kaden Warren (Berryville, Va.), freshman first baseman Garrett Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman shortstop PJ Alvanos (Annapolis, Md.) each drove in two runs and stole a pair of bases.

Sophomore right-hander Jason Wood (Gloucester, Va.) threw four hitless innings in relief and struck out four to earn his second win of the season.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 12, Greensboro 6

Records: Lynchburg 19-20, Greensboro 22-19

Venue: Ted Leonard Park, Greensboro, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg got on the board in the top of the first thanks to an RBI groundout from Warren, but Greensboro rallied for six runs in the next two frames to take a 6-1 lead.

  • The Hornets rallied for six runs in the fifth, taking the lead on Alvanos' two-out, two-run single to left.

  • Lynchburg added three more runs in the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of Greensboro fielding errors, and scored twice more in the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice by freshman right fielder Brenden McDonald (Virginia Beach, Va.).

  • Three Hornet relievers -- sophomore right-hander Michael Reiskind (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Wood and senior right-hander Wesley Steelman (Glen Allen, Va.) -- held Greensboro scoreless after the second inning.
