Newport News, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Directors voted two University of Lynchburg baseball players onto its College Division All-State team, VaSID announced Wednesday morning.
Freshman third baseman/right-handed pitcher Garrett Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned rookie of the year honors in the Commonwealth, while graduate student utility man Kinston Carson (Tappahannock, Va.) earned enough votes for a first-team spot.
It marks the first time since 2014 that Lynchburg has seen multiple players earn All-State honors.
Carson adds the All-State award onto a growing pile after his first season with Lynchburg; he already collected third-team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference laurels to go with third-team selections on both the D3baseball.com and American Baseball Coaches Association's All-South Atlantic Region squads.
He posted a conference-best 12.25 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio and ranked third in the ODAC with a 3.12 over 43 ⅓ innings. Carson struck out a team-high 59 batters.
The Hornets' regular in right field when not on the mound, he hit .279 with one home run, 24 RBI and 16 stolen bases, along with a team-high 25 walks.
Jackson adds the top rookie honor to the same award from the ODAC. The Lynchburg third baseman hit in the middle of the order all year, compiling a .350 average with team-bests in hits (56), doubles (15), triples (4), home runs (3) and RBI (40). He was 2-1 on the mound in 13 appearances and was selected as the ODAC player of the week March 18.
He is the third player in program history to win the Commonwealth rookie of the year honor, following Brandon Miller in 2012 and Brock Shiflett in 2010.
Lynchburg's baseball team finished the season with a 19-22 record and captured the No. 7 seed in the ODAC tournament.
