Indianapolis, Ind. -- University of Lynchburg will play host to the first round of the NCAA Division III field hockey tournament Wednesday, the NCAA announced Sunday night with its release of the 2018 tournament bracket.
The Old Dominion Athletic Conference champion Hornets will welcome Denison, the champions of the North Coast Athletic Conference, to Lynchburg on Wednesday, Nov. 7 on Shellenberger Field at 2 p.m. Admission will be $8 at the gate and $3 for students with student ID.
Wednesday's winner will make the trip Glassboro, N.J., to square off with No. 3 Rowan on Saturday, Nov. 10.
Lynchburg (15-5) rolled through the weekend's conference tournament, defeating Roanoke, 3-1, in the semifinal round and Shenandoah, 7-2, in the championship for the Hornets' first league crown since 2014. Lynchburg enters the NCAA tournament on an 11-game winning streak.
Denison (18-2) dispatched Wooster, 2-0, to take the NCAC title and secure its tournament berth.
Both Lynchburg and Denison were receiving votes in the most recent National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III top 25.
Lynchburg is 3-4 all-time against the Big Red, but the Hornets have taken the past two meetings, winning 3-0 in 2010 and 6-2 in 2009, both on Shellenberger Field. The two programs have met just once in the postseason; Denison knocked Lynchburg out of the 1980 AIAW national tournament.
The NCAA berth is Lynchburg's 17th in program history, and the Hornets are 8-16 all-time in national tournament games. The team advanced to the Elite 8 in 1984, 2001, 2011, and 2012 and was the AIAW national runner-up in 1981.
