Gilbert, Ariz. -- University of Lynchburg's field hockey team became one of 131 programs honored as a 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced last week.
The Division III National Academic Team Award recognizes programs that earned a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2018-19 academic year. Lynchburg's team carried a 3.47 team GPA last semester to easily make the grade.
The Hornets field hockey program has reached the National Academic Team threshold each year since 2010.
Lynchburg paired the success in the classroom with success on the field, claiming the 2018 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship and winning a game in the NCAA Division III tournament. The Hornets finished the season with a 16-6 record.
The NFHCA's academic awards continue through this spring with the Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA National Academic Squad, the Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Scholars of Distinction and the Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA National Scholar-Athlete.
