Lynchburg, Va.-- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team blanked the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon college 2-0 Friday night to open up Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
Lynchburg (7-3, 1-0 ODAC) put a barrage of shots on R-MC in the first half, but it was not until the end of the second quarter that one found the back of the cage. Senior Lindsay Riley connected on a pass from freshman Kessa Romero to put the Hornets up 1-0 going into the half. It was Riley's second goal of the season.
The third quarter saw 10 shots from the Hornets but none were able to find their way past the Randolph-Macon goalkeeper. Lynchburg had 28 total shots on the night outshooting the Yellow Jackets (4-5, 0-1) 28-2 with 17 of those being on frame.
Early in the fourth quarter, junior Jackie Lerro passed a ball through the middle in front of the Randolph-Macon goal and connected with fellow junior Emily Dudley for a goal, putting the Hornets up by two and capping off the 2-0 victory.
Hornets goalkeeper Laurel Nicks posted her first shutout since an Oct. 20, 2018 versus Bridgewater.
Romero finished the night with nine shots, five of which were on target and an assist while Lerro also finished with an assist and six shots, with three of hers on frame.
The University of Lynchburg field hockey team will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. when they take on the Captains from Christopher Newport Univeristy at the Liberty University Field Hockey Complex.
