Gilbert, Ariz. -- For the first time since 1981, multiple University of Lynchburg field hockey players earned All-America honors as juniors Alexis Brown and Jackie Lerro were selected to the 2019 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-America teams, the organization announced Wednesday.
Brown and Lerro were two of the 48 student-athletes recognized across three teams by the NFHCA.
Lerro, a native of Royersford, Pa., earned the All-America nod for the first time in her career as she earned a spot on the second team. Lerro was named all-region ealier this month for the third time in her career to go along with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference offensive player of the year award. Lerro garnered national attention after scoring seven goals in two games and was named NFHCA's Division III player of the week ending Sept. 30.
Brown continued her defensive success in 2019 as she was named third team All-American. She was part of a Lynchburg defense that was ranked nationally in the top 20 for goals-against average and scoring margin. The Culpeper product was named first-team all-region earlier this month and landed a spot on the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's first-team as well.
Lynchburg field hockey players have been named All-America 25 times over the program's storied history. This is the first time that two players have been named All-Americans since Molly Brogan and Phebe Phelps earned the honor back in 1981.
The Hornets finished the 2019 season with a 20-4 record and defeated Shenandoah in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship to capture the progam's 20th title. Lynchburg won a pair of NCAA tournament games to reach the quarterfinal round of the national tournament for only the the fifth time in program history and amassed 20 wins in a season for just the third time.
