Lynchburg, Va.-- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team began the new year right with an 87-73 win against the Cougars of Averett University Sunday afternoon at home.
Senior forward Connor Schroeder (Blacksburg, Va.) led the Hornets with 24 points, his second-highest scoring output of this season, to go along with 12 rebounds.
Senior wing Austin Wrighten (Woodbridge, Va.) added 21 points of his own and six rebounds, and junior guard Chance Greene (Creedmoor, N.C.) picked up 15 points, seven assists without a turnover, and four rebounds.
Vince Contreras led Averett with 18 points.
Lynchburg's men continued the best start in program history, moving to 12-1 on the season. The Hornets received votes in the latest D3hoops.com top 25 poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Schroeder started the game with a bang, nailing a 3-pointer on Lynchburg's opening possession, but the Hornets' offense slowed as Averett took a 22-14 lead. Greene helped the Hornets climb back into the game with back-to-back 3s that made it 22-20.
Lynchburg gained momentum as Wrighten sparked a 10-0 run with a jumper in the lane, followed by Schroeder's second 3 of the day, and Wrighten's stickback layup that tied the game at 30. Lynchburg finished the run with a layup from Greene and a free throw by junior forward Cody Lang (Madison Heights, Va.).
Despite Averett shooting 56 percent (14-for-25) from the field in the first half, the Hornets led 39-36 at halftime, highlighted by Greene's team-high 11 points.
The Hornets stepped it up in the second half, breaking the game with a 12-0 run in the early part of the period. Lynchburg led by as many as 25 points in the game as Schroeder and Wrighten teamed up for 29 points after the break.
Lynchburg will resume Old Dominion Athletic Conference play in Winchester, Va., Saturday against Shenandoah at 4 p.m.
