Denison Defeats LC 10-5 in Men's Lacrosse NCAA Tournament Second Round

LYNCHBURG, VA – Chip Phillips won 14 of his 20 face-off attempts Saturday evening to help the eighth-ranked Denison University men's lacrosse team defeat third-ranked Lynchburg College 10-5 in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament on Shellenberger Field.

Phillips helped the Big Red control possession of the ball for most of a game and the majority of the second half. Goalie Nick Petracca was excellent in net, making 13 saves and squashing many of the Hornet offensive opportunities.

Lynchburg scored just nine seconds into the game after a face-off win as senior Andrew Wilfong found the back of the net. Denison defense held LC scoreless for the next 35 minutes and 44 seconds, gaining control of the game with a 6-1 lead early in the third period. DU scored twice each in the first and second quarters to lead 4-1 at the break and added two more early goals in the third. Five different players scored during the stretch, with Davis Lukens posting two. Senior Dylan Hoff netted an unassisted goal at 9:07 for LC.

Leading 6-2 mid-way through the third, Eddie Vita scored twice and assisted on a third tally to help the Big Red pull ahead 9-2. Hoff scored again from junior Ben Sauer as the third quarter closed to within six.

The Big Red committed a two-minute un-releasable penalty at 10:31, but managed to keep the Hornets off the scoreboard and post a man-down goal. Sauer and junior Max Voumard scored late goals but LC couldn't make up the difference.

The Hornets outshot their guests 30-22 and forced 27 turnovers while committing 17. DU scored on three of its extra-man opportunities, while LC was 0-2. Hoff had two scores and an assist from Lynchburg and Sauer, Wilfong and Voumard each had one score. Vita had three goals and two assists and Alex Hardt also had three scores. Cory Couture had five assists.

Denison (15-1) advances to play at Stevenson University Wednesday in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Hornets end the season 17-2, setting the school record for most wins in a season and capturing the program's fourth ODAC Title.
