HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia Wesleyan got on the board early when Andrew Freeman finished a rebounded save in the sixth minute, and the Marlins took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Lynchburg offense awoke in the second stanza, however, sparked by Kearns' long-distance, left-footed strike that tied the match in the 49th minute.
The Hornets took a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute when Mackey's free kick was headed into the Marlins' goal by a VWU defender.
Lynchburg added some cushion in the 68th minute, thanks to a Mackey penalty kick after senior midfielder Dan Friedberg (Blacksburg, Va.) drew a foul in the box.
VWU scored its second goal in the 77th minute to trim the lead to one, but Dunham added some breathing room in the 85th to ice the match with an unassisted goal.
Lynchburg will remain home for a Homecoming matchup with Bridgewater on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
