Bridgewater, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer program placed two Hornets on the Virginia Sports Information Directors' College Division All-State teams, VaSID announced Thursday afternoon.
Freshman forward Luke Mega landed on the first team and also won the rookie of the year award, and junior midfielder Ben Mackey was voted to the second team. Athletic communications professionals around the Commonwealth vote on the All-State awards.
Mega's honors add to an already-long list for the standout rookie from Glen Allen; he also claimed the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's top newcomer award, first-team All-ODAC, and second-team All-South Atlantic Region honors. Mega led the Hornets and ranked third in the conference with 10 goals and also dished out three assists.
He is just the second player in program history to win rookie of the year honors, following goalkeeper Michael Releford, who took the award in 2010.
Mackey, a Leesburg native, becomes a two-time All-State honoree after landing second-team honors a season ago as well. He was a second-team All-ODAC and third-team all-region pick in 2019 after leading the Hornets in shots (53) while netting four goals and three assists.
Mary Washington's Gabriel Soriano laid claim to the state player of the year award, while Washington and Lee mentor Mike Singleton took coach of the year honors.
Lynchburg has seen multiple players named All-State each year since 2013.
