LC Softball Named NFCA All-Academic Team
STARKVILLE, MS – The Lynchburg College softball team was named a Division III All-Academic team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Coach Dawn Simmons' team finished with the 15th highest GPA in the nation, at 3.437, the highest mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Along with the team honor, eight Hornets were named All-America Scholar Athletes. Seniors Katie Bruce, Caitlin Dolby, Ashley Hohenberger, junior Taylor Walker, sophomore Logan-Ann Gittman, and freshmen Cassie Phillips, Leah Poehner, Melanie Tenney garnered the award. To qualify, a student-athlete had to have a GPA higher than a 3.5.
"I'm very proud of the team and their hard work in the classroom and on the softball field," said Hornet head softball coach Dawn Simmons. "It is nice to see the team's dedication paying off in both areas. Academics are our first priority and we are very proud of our academic tradition."
The Hornets finished their fall season this past Saturday. Lynchburg opens their 2012 season hosting a double-header against non-conference foe Greensboro College on February 15.
