Virginia Beach, Va. -- The Lynchburg College softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Virginia Wesleyan, dropping 11-3 in 5 innings in Game 1 before a 4-1 loss in Game 2. The games marked both teams' opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference series.

Sophomore second baseman Sarah Commons (Glen Allen, Va.) was one of Lynchburg's bright spots at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a three-run home run in the opener.

Junior third baseman Taylor Mabry (Bassett, Va.) went 2-for-3 in the second contest and drove in the Hornets' lone run with a solo homer.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • The Marlins wasted no time, scoring on a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the first to take the lead. VWU doubled up the advantage in the second.

  • Lynchburg counter-punched in the top of the third when Commons took 2017 national player of the year Hanna Hull deep to right field, bringing home junior first baseman Mackenzie Chitwood (Ferrum, Va.), Mabry, and herself and cutting the lead to 4-3.

  • Hull would have the last laugh, though, as she retired the last seven Hornets for her 12th victory of the year as the Marlin offense poured on the offense to win 11-3 in 5 innings.

Game 2

  • Scoreless through 3 ½ innings, Virginia Wesleyan finally got to senior pitcher Conner English (Altavista, Va.) in the fourth with a solo homer. The Marlins tagged English for three more in the following inning.

  • Lynchburg couldn't respond until the seventh when Mabry slammed a solo shot to left field, but the Hornets couldn't make up any more ground.
