Louisville, Ky. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team and nine Hornet players earned 2017-18 national honors for their efforts in the classroom, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced this week.
Head coach Dawn Simmons' Lynchburg group was one of 102 NCAA Division III programs to earn the 2018 Easton/NFCA Academic Team honor. The Hornets combined for a team GPA of 3.383, ranking 60th among the more than 300 programs in Division III.
Lynchburg has been listed as an Academic Team each year since the list's inception in 2014.
Nine Hornet ballplayers earned 2017-18 Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete honors as well, holding a 3.5 GPA or better during last academic year: junior pitcher Taylor Belknap (Arden, N.C.), senior second baseman Leslie Bourgeois (Bealeton, Va.), sophomore pitcher Alex Cisar (Sykesville, Md.), senior center fielder Skylar Dickens (Virginia Beach, Va.), senior pitcher Conner English (Altavista, Va.), freshman pitcher Kristen Harkins (Chesapeake, Va.), sophomore pitcher Stephanie Hogan (Amherst, Va.), sophomore shortstop Kayla Hugate (Midlothian, Va.), and senior utility player MacKenzie Mount (Forest, Va.).
Dickens and Mount each boasted perfect 4.0 GPAs for the year.
Lynchburg played to a 30-14 record in 2018 and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III tournament, where they competed in the Atlanta Regional.
