No. 6 softball splits at Bridgewater

Sarah Commons squares to bunt

Bridgewater, Va. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Lynchburg softball team rallied late in the nightcap to earn an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader split Sunday at Bridgewater.

The Eagles won Game 1, 5-4, while Lynchburg took the final game, also by a 5-4 score.

Junior second baseman Sarah Commons (Glen Allen, Va.) went 5-for-6 with two runs scored on the day, while senior third baseman Taylor Mabry (Bassett, Va.) and senior first baseman Mackenzie Chitwood (Ferrum, Va.) each homered for the Hornets. Mabry's was a go-ahead, two-run shot in the sixth inning that helped the Hornets win Game 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Lynchburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single from junior left fielder Carol Oberhelman (Washington Township, N.J.) and a two-run double off the bat of junior shortstop Kayla Hugate (Chesterfield, Va.).

  • Bridgewater struck back for two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Chitwood made it a 4-2 Lynchburg lead with a solo homer in the third.

  • The Eagles tied the game with two runs in the fifth and took the lead in the sixth on Stephanie Carroll's RBI double, holding on to win in the seventh and final inning.

Game 2

  • The game was a pitcher's duel early, but Chitwood finally put Lynchburg ahead with an RBI double in the third.

  • Bridgewater finally broke through in the sixth for four runs, but Lynchburg responded with four in the top of the seventh. Oberhelman's double scored Commons to start the damage, followed by Hugate's sac fly and a two-run home run from Mabry to put the Hornets ahead.

  • Bridgewater got baserunners on first and second in the seventh, but senior right-hander Taylor Belknap (Arden, N.C.) nailed down the one-out save.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will play host to Guilford on Wednesday, April 3. The doubleheader is set for a 3 p.m. start on Lynchburg's Moon Field.
