Virginia Beach, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team dropped a heartbreaker, 1-0, Saturday morning to No. 1-ranked Virginia Wesleyan in Game 3 of the NCAA Division III tournament's Virginia Beach Regional.
Jessica Lindsay hit the walk-off, RBI double for the Marlins with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Maria Weddle from first to break the scoreless tie.
Senior right-hander Taylor Belknap (Arden, N.C.) pitched valiantly for the 17th-ranked Hornets, allowing just two hits to the defending national champions through 6 ⅓ innings. She struck out two hitters and walked four.
VWU southpaw Hanna Hull matched the Lynchburg hurler. The two-time national player of the year struck out 12 Hornets and also allowed just two hits, a leadoff single to junior shortstop Kayla Hugate (Chesterfield, Va.) and a fourth-inning triple to senior catcher Brittany Coffey (Manassas, Va.).
Lynchburg will play the winner of the ongoing loser-out game between No. 13 Manhattanville and Scranton at 2 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner will face Virginia Wesleyan Sunday.
