Louisville, Ky. -- University of Lynchburg's softball coaching staff won the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Division III Atlantic Region coaching staff of the year award, the NFCA announced Monday.
Head coach Dawn Simmons and assistants Audra Della Rosa, Mike Jennings, Danielle Powell and MacKenzie Mount guided the Hornets to a 37-15 record and the NCAA Virginia Beach Regional championship after an at-large bid to the national tournament.
The team earned Simmons her 600th-career win in 2019, her 21st season as Lynchburg's head softball coach, by topping No. 13 Manhattanville in loser-out action at the regional tournament.
The Hornets then went on to defeat then-No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan twice to advance to the Super Regional round, where they lost to eventual national runner-up Emory University.
Lynchburg defeated ranked opponents eight times on the year and reached the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in program history and the second-straight year.
The NFCA names regional coaching staffs of the year for each of Division III's eight regions.
