Los Angeles, Calif. -- The Collegiate Women Sports Awards announced University of Lynchburg senior Mackenzie Chitwood (Ferrum, Va.) as the Division III finalist from softball for the 2019 Honda Award, the CWSA announced Monday afternoon.

The Hornets' first baseman was one of 12 Division III finalists, one chosen from each NCAA-sanctioned sport, for the honor.

Thomas More women's basketball player Madison Temple claimed the Honda Athlete of the Year Award for Division III, the CWSA also announced.

CBS Sports will honor the winners from all divisions in a June 24 telecast at 6 p.m. EDT, live from Los Angeles.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Division III player of the year, Chitwood rewrote the Lynchburg and Old Dominion Athletic Conference offensive record books this season with 21 home runs and 72 RBI, leading Division III in both categories. She also won the Division III statistical championship with 140 total bases.

She led the Hornets with 63 hits on the season, equaling out to a .382 average, and was ODAC player of the week three times.

She slugged 1.000 with a .511 on-base percentage in 12 postseason games, winning the NCAA Virginia Beach Regional's Most Outstanding Player honor and a spot on the ODAC's all-tournament team. She hit seven home runs and drove in 19 runs in the postseason.
Lynchburg finished the season with a 37-15 record -- the second-best in program history -- and reached the NCAA Division III Super Regional round, where they fell to national runner-up Emory University in the best-of-three series.

She is playing in the American Softball Association, a professional league in Satsuma, Ala., this summer.

The CWSA, in its 43rd year, honors the nation's top NCAA women athletes recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.1 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
