New Orleans, La. -- Four Lynchburg College outdoor track & field athletes earned All-South/Southeast Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced with its all-region teams Monday.
Athletes earn region accolades by posting one of the top-five individual or top-three relay times in their respective regions throughout the season.
Graduate student Natalie Deacon (West Chester, Pa.) led the way with two all-region honors for the Lynchburg women's track team, while sophomore Michela Cholak (Ocean Township, N.J.) and freshman Kaitlyn Johnson (Spotsylvania, Va.) each made the list in one event. Freshman Azavier Kirtley (Roanoke, Va.) represented the Hornet men.
Deacon, a three-time All-American between her indoor and outdoor careers, made the list in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. Her 800 time of 2:11.78, set at Lynchburg's home meet, ranks 11th nationally and is just .12 seconds off the program record she set a season ago. In the 1,500, Deacon ranks 23rd nationally (4:32.69). She qualified for NCAA Division III nationals in both events but will only run the 1,500 at this weekend's meet in LaCrosse, Wis.; Deacon was an All-American in the event a year ago as a senior.
Cholak broke the program record 3,000-meter Steeplechase on two occasions this season, most recently earlier this month at the Swarthmore Twilight Qualifier, where she finished the event in 11:08.29. That time ranks 40th nationally.
Johnson emerged as one of the region's top distance runners this spring, winning an Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship with an all-region 10,000-meter time of 38:14.79.
Kirtley, who was named the ODAC's Rookie of the Meet at both the indoor and outdoor championships, earned all-region honors in the 400-meter dash. His 48.59-second jaunt to win the conference championship was tops in the ODAC for the season.
Lynchburg will wrap up its outdoor track & field season this weekend with Deacon's trip to the national championship meet.
