Track & field wins team titles at Randolph meet

Zoe Scales triple jumping

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's and women's outdoor track & field teams rushed to team titles Saturday across town at Randolph College's WildCat Invitational.

The Hornet men tallied 183 points on the day on the heels of five event victories, outpacing second-place Washington and Lee (148).

Lynchburg's women also won handily with 178 points and captured individual gold in seven events. Second-place Liberty snagged 141 points.

Freshman Zoe Scales (Danville, Va.) led the Lynchburg women with a pair of all-time top 10 performances. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.12 seconds, the second-fastest race in program history, and also took top honors in the triple jump (35-9 ¼).

Sophomore LaMaya Lacy (Bremo Bluff, Va.) finished just behind her teammate in the short hurdles (15.14), the third-fastest time in Lynchburg history.

Scales and her Hornet teammates won the top four spots in the triple jump Saturday.

Freshman Jessica Cammarata (Ledgewood, N.J.) won her race in the 200-meter dash (25.95) to improve on her own third-best time in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and fourth-best mark in the Lynchburg record book.

Freshman Lizzie Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.19, the seventh-fastest long hurdles in program history.

Junior Disa Haugsdahl (Warrenton, Va.) led the Lynchburg throwing contingent with a 99-11 ½ javelin heave, the fifth-best in the ODAC this season and 10th-farthest toss ever at Lynchburg.

Senior Endasia Mitchell (Perry Hall, Md.) also took an event win, clearing 5-1 ¾ in the high jump to match her best-ever mark, which ranks eighth all-time at the school, and senior Madeline Van Aken (Blacksburg, Va.) won the pole vault, topping 11-3.

Junior Sammi Woods (Fredericksburg, Va.) placed third in the shot put (39-2 ¼), improving on her own third-best mark in the conference and fourth all-time for Lynchburg.

Freshman Faith Francis (Midlothian, Va.) ran to second in the 400-meter dash (1:01.77), the fifth-best mark in the league this season.

Not to be outdone, the Lynchburg men also etched some new marks into the program record book. Junior Kevin Moran (Milford, N.J.) raced to second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.36), improving on his own third-best time in the conference and moving into 10th all-time at Lynchburg in the event.

Three Hornet throws earned event wins, as senior Dalton Hoppe (Buchanan, Va.) took top honors in the hammer (166-2 ¼), just off his own ODAC-best mark, and the discus (132-10). Sophomore Jake Degenshein (Collegeville, Pa.) won the javelin, heaving the stick 168-11 ½, also just short of his own ODAC-best mark.

Senior Randy Harris (Richmond, Va.) won the triple jump, covering 43-1 ¾, and sophomore Julian Douglas (Lynchburg, Va.) won the long jump (21-6 ¾).

Freshman Alex Shadkhoo (Herndon, Va.) ran to second in the 400-meter dash (50.19), a time that ranks fifth in the ODAC, and freshman William Fowler (Buchanan, Va.) took over fifth place in the conference in the 800-meter run, finishing second in 1:57.57.

The Hornet teams will look to carry Saturday's momentum into next weekend's Old Dominion Athletic Conference outdoor championships, which will also be hosted by Randolph. Both Lynchburg's teams currently rank second in the USTFCCCA's South/Southeast Region rankings.
