Women's basketball tabbed third in ODAC preseason ballot

Lynchburg women's basketball watches Coach during a timeout.

Forest, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team enters the 2018-19 season ranked third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference by the league's coaches, the ODAC announced Thursday with its preseason poll.

Lynchburg checks into the ballot just behind defending conference champion Randolph-Macon and league runner-up Emory & Henry, both of which advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament last season. The Yellow Jackets lead the poll with 139 points and seven first-place points, while the Wasps earned 136 points and six top nods.

Lynchburg follows in the poll with 122 points, while Guilford (105 points) and Virginia Wesleyan (94) round out the top five.

The Hornets come into 2018-19 in search of the program's fourth-straight 20-win season and seventh-consecutive campaign above .500. Lynchburg was 20-6 a season ago and 12-4 in the ODAC.

Lynchburg brings back one all-conference performer in senior forward Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.), a second-teamer a season ago and the team's leading returner in minutes, points, 3-pointers, rebounds, steals, and blocks.

Two other players with starting experience, senior forward Alex Allen (China Grove, N.C.) and sophomore guard Maggie Quarles (Roanoke, Va.), return for Lynchburg as well.

The Hornets will open the season at home, Saturday, Nov. 10, against North Carolina Wesleyan at noon.
