HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Johnston nailed a 3-pointer on the opening possession, and the Wasps held a narrow lead throughout the first period. Freshman guard Emily Elliott (High Point, N.C.) made a layup with 7 seconds left in the quarter to cut the hosts' lead to 16-14 after 10 minutes of play.

  • Freshman forward Erin Green (Poolesville, Md.) gave Lynchburg its first lead with 6:33 until halftime, part of an 8-1 Hornets run, and Elliott made it a 29-22 Lynchburg advantage with 2:26 'til the break.

  • E&H finished the half with seven unanswered points to knot the score at 29 midway through.

  • The Wasps started the third period with a 9-0 run, totaling 16 unanswered points around intermission, to take control of the game, but Lynchburg fought back with three straight baskets to cut the lead to one possession with 3:30 left in the third.

  • Davis' layup with 19 seconds left in the period gave Lynchburg a 41-40 lead, but the Wasps' Josie Salyer countered with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. Lynchburg trailed 43-42 with 10 minutes to go.

  • Lynchburg hung around in the fourth, and Shephard tied the game, 53-53, with 3:46 remaining. McKinney countered with back-to-back baskets for E&H, and the Wasps led the rest of the way.
