Sewanee, Tenn. -- Senior forward Caitlin Mertens (Succasunna, N.J.) put 13th-ranked University of Lynchburg's women's soccer team on the board in the 55th minute, and the Hornet defense held on the rest of the way for a 1-0 win over No. 20 Emory University in Saturday action at the Sewanee Invitational.
Mertens' goal was her team-leading fourth in Lynchburg's five matches this season.
Senior goalkeeper Delia LoSapio (Raleigh, N.C.) dazzled again between the pipes, logging her third shutout of the season with four saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team was able to break through in the first half as the Eagles won the edge on both shots, 6-3, and shots-on-goal, 2-1.
Lynchburg struck early in the second half when Mertens finished a feed from fifth-year midfielder Rachel Cooke (Charlottesville, Va.) in the 55th minute.
The Hornets were nearly able to double the lead in the 68th minute, when senior forward Hannah Olds (Wilmington, N.C.) struck the crossbar with Lynchburg's only other shot of the second half.
LoSapio made three of her four saves in the second half to preserve the lead.
The Hornets will continue play in the Sewanee Invitational Sunday, Sept. 16, taking on the host Tigers at noon on Puett Field.
