LYNCHBURG, VA – Lynchburg College started off the home portion of the fall tennis schedule splitting men's and women's matches against Southern Virginia University on Thursday.

The Hornet men gave SVU its first loss of the fall following a spring season that saw the team finish 15-1 by defeating them 5-4 Thursday afternoon. The women fell 7-2 to the Knights.

Cody Crampton was the first singles player to record a point for the Hornets with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Josh Michelsen at #5 singles. The victory sent Crampton out on top as graduation approached for the senior later in the fall.

Derek Kegerreis continued his hot streak with another victory, this time defeating Timothy Birch at #2 singles 6-0, 6-1. Tyler Long picked up the other singles win for LC, taking down Kenneth Mize at #6, 6-2, 6-3.

The doubles tandem of Crampton and Owen Landon continued to gel, as they dismissed Brian Blocher and Josh Hinkle 8-5. Blocher and Hinkle both won their singles matches, with Hinkle defeating Landon.

Josh Johnson and Blake Underwood clinched the decisive fifth point for the Hornets with an 8-6 win over Aaron Bailey and Lancaster Brown at #3 doubles.

The big differences in the women's match were the close sets at the top of the ladder that went the way of the Knights. LC's #1 Kelsey Bergen and #2 Melissa M. Drinkard lost 9-7 and 9-8, respectively.

Betsy Stipa picked up the Hornets' lone point in singles with an 8-1 win at #3 singles. Bergen and Madison Dixon paired up for the Hornets' second point, winning at #2 doubles 8-3.
